About this guide:
This guides soul purpose is to teach you about the biggest new addition to Diamond/Pearl, the next generation of Pokemon and the mechanics that can have you win or lose battles. Nintendo introduced Wifi capabilities to the big world of Pokemon. What does this mean? This means you can battle/trade/or even chat with people all over the world, an amazing advancement to the game play of D/P.

The Basics:
-----------------------------------------------------------------

EV's- EV's are the main things that makes a significant difference in your pokemon stats. Some of the "rules" of EV's:
-All EV's have a total max of 510
-The max amount of EV's in 1 stat are 255
- 4 EV's in one stat = 1 extra point in the given stat AT LEVEL 100

Now, as you may know, 510 can't be divided by 4 so you'll have extra EV's no matter what. Also, 255 can't be divided by 4 so most EV sets are 252/252/6. EV's are gained by defeating an enemy in the wild or in a trainer battle. Anytime you gain EXP, you gain EV's. All of the 493 pokemon give EV's in a stat. Which Pokemon give the EV's in say Attack? Check this guide out made by Alexcalibur3000 of GameFAQs.com:

This shows what Pokemon give certain EV's.
To calculate EV's, here's how you do it:
There are many items that cut the time to EV train, these items are:
Power Weight - +4 EV's to HP
Power Bracer - +4 EV's to Attack
Power Belt - +4 EV's to Defense
Power Lens - +4 EV's to Special Attack
Power Band - +4 EV's to Special Defense
Power Ankle - +4 EV's to Speed
Macho Bracer - 2x EV's in all stats
Pokerus (a rare virus) - 2x EV's in all stats
Now, the Power Items and the Macho Bracer decrease the speed. The Power Items can be found in the Battle Tower and cost 16 BP each.
That's about the basics of EV's

IV's- IV's are like EV's except they are automatic and random in each stat. The IV's are chosen when you first catch/obtain the pokemon. They range from 0-31. Now if you catch say 2 Gibles of the same level and natures, but the stats are different, that's the IV's taking effect. Now, for 1 IV, that stat with the IV is +1. So if a Gible has an Attack IV of 24, that Gible will have 24 more attack points than a Gible with 0 IV's in attack. Now, the IV's aren't completely unknowable, there are many IV calculators like this one:
All you do is input the lvl, stats and the EV's you put in the pokemon. Yes that's right, to be able to check the IV's, you MUST know the EV's you put in the pokemon. You can also check the final stats of the pokemon with EV's and IV's calculated. This calculator is a must for all competitive battling people. One final note, if you don't want to completely check the IV's, you can use the message on the bottom of the pokemon stats. It will say like, proud of it's power. Here's the list of the possible sayings:
HP: Loves to eat, often dozes off, often scatters things, scatters things often, likes to relax
ATK: Proud of its power, likes to thrash about, a little quick tempered, likes to fight, quick tempered
DEF: Sturdy body, capable of taking hits, highly persistent, good endurance, good perseverance
S. ATK: Highly curious, mischievous, thoroughly cunning, often lost in thought, very finicky
S. DEF: Strong willed, somewhat vain, strongly defiant, hates to lose, somewhat stubborn
SPEED: Likes to run, alert to sounds, impetuous and silly, somewhat of a clown, quick to flee

That's about it for IV's

Natures
--------------------------------------------------
Natures are the "buffing" effect of a stat. These have the little extra, but are the biggest difference on some pokemon. Here is the list of natures:
-Lonely: +Attack, -Defense
-Brave: +Attack, -Speed
-Adamant: +Attack, -Special Attack
-Naughty: +Attack, -Special Defense
-Bold: +Defense, -Attack
-Relaxed: +Defense, -Speed
-Impish: +Defense, -Special Attack
-Lax: +Defense, -Special Defense
-Timid: +Speed, -Attack
-Hasty: +Speed, -Defense
-Jolly: +Speed, -Special Attack
-Naive: +Speed, -Special Defense

-Modest: +Special Attack, -Attack
-Mild: +Special Attack, -Defense
-Quiet: +Special Attack, -Speed

-Rash: +Special Attack, -Special Defense
-Calm: +Special Defense, -Attack
-Gentle: +Special Defense, -Defense
-Sassy: +Special Defense, -Speed
-Careful: +Special Defense, -Special Attack

There are also some Natures that DON'T affect any Stat. They are Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky.
Now, what this means is, say my Gible has a Jolly nature. This means the Speed stat will have an extra 10% added on a stat and Special Attack will have 10% deducted from the stat. Natures are usually the buffing stat to give that little extra boost to be deadly in competitive battling.
